More than 60 scouts from Oldonyiro conservancy on Tuesday graduated as rangers after a two-week training by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

Oldonyiro MCA David Lemantile said the rangers will be tasked with helping in the fight against cattle rustling and poaching that has been rampant in the area.

He said the conservancy rangers will also heighten security of the community and wildlife and will also help curb encroachment of private ranches by herders in Laikipia County.

“Cattle rustling and poaching has been widespread since the area is considered as a banditry corridor towards other counties, but the situation is expected to improve now with the introduction of rangers,” he said.

The rangers will also manage grazing patterns in the area, also aimed at reducing conflict between locals and the neighbouring counties over pastures.
