MPs from Meru have reacted angrily to Governor Peter Munya’s remarks that he was not ready to work with them.

The MP’s warned that such provocative remarks by a leader of Mr Munya’s calibre were uncalled-for.

Speaking to Nation.co.ke by phone, MPs Mpuru Aburi (Tigania East), David Karithi (Tigania West), Kathuri Murungi (South Imenti) and Rahim Dawood (North Imenti) accused the governor of fuelling the political divisions between them.

On Friday last week, the county boss said he was not interested in working with the legislators.

Mr Munya said the lawmakers were part of a wider scheme that was derailing devolution.

He spoke during a groundbreaking ceremony at Kinoru Stadium.

ACCUSED PARLIAMENT

Mr Munya accused the National Assembly of deliberately taking too long to pass the County Allocation of Revenue Bill in a bid to portray the devolved units as inefficient.

The MPs passed 23 laws that, he said, are against the spirit of devolution and will take the country to the old days.

But the MP’s have accused Mr Munya of only focusing his development agenda on Meru Town, which is the headquarters of the county.

In an apparent reference to complete and ongoing infrastructural projects in Meru Town, Mr Aburi wondered why the governor and his administration had not initiated any projects in a majority of the rural areas in Meru County.

“You cannot tarmac a few verandas in Meru Town using cabro paving blocks and claim that you are working for the people. The county government will be judged collectively if it fails to deliver to its people,” said Mr Aburi.

Adding that the hostilities were far from over, the legislator accused Mr Munya of having left incomplete projects during his tenure as the Tigania East MP.

SUPPORTED COUNTY BOARDS

He voiced his support for the County Development Boards, which are headed by senators but have now been put on hold until a case by the Council of Governors is heard and determined.

“That is why as MPs we are supporting the formation of the County Development Boards so that we can bring all our monies together and decide as leaders what is best for our people,” he said.

For his part, Mr Dawood urged the governor to stop playing cheap politics and join the legislators and other leaders elected by the people in developing the county.

Mr Karithi challenged the county government to outline what it had done for the people of Tigania West, saying there was little to be proud of.

“Meru County is bigger than any of us. I am not sure whether the governor really meant it, but the wananchi are really concerned about the unity of leaders, which is of paramount importance for development.

"As one of the most senior politicians in the county, this is the time Mr Munya should show leadership and seize the opportunity to unite us towards development,” Mr Murungi said.
