Meru Governor Peter Munya has said the corruption allegations against him are politically instigated.

Mr Munya said his rivals were using abuse of office claims against him to fight him politically.

He said the corruption claims facing him are unfounded as he used his private car for official duties before he got an official vehicle.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission accuses him of spending public funds to fuel, service and repair his private vehicle.

“It is in the public domain that when I came into office there was no official car. I used my private vehicle for three months before the government purchased an official vehicle for me. The public funds spent on servicing and fuelling my private car were fully accounted for,” the governor said.

He spoke during the swearing-in of county executive for Youth and Gender Joy Karui on Tuesday.

He said the anti-corruption officers were provided with all documents on the transactions.

“When I got an official car, the government serviced my private vehicle to restore it to its original condition. This is why I am being accused of corruption,” he said.

Mr Munya argued that most governors used their private cars for official duties after the elections yet he was the only one indicted.

“I was named because there are people fighting me politically. Political enemies have realised that my good work is drawing attention and are trying to soil my name,” he said.

The governor said he was not shaken by the corruption claims.

He further disputed allegations that he was involved in corruption as MP for Tigania East, saying his development record in the constituency is unrivalled.

Mr Munya said he would not step aside over the corruption claims.
