National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) boss John Mututho has called for a lifestyle audit of employees of the agency

Addressing journalists in Naivasha on Saturday, Mr Mututho said some of the junior officers of the authority were living in “affluence” despite their “modest earnings”.

He cited several of them who had acquired properties worth millions of shillings, including high-rise residential buildings in Nairobi, within a short time.

“Their tasty lifestyles leave a lot to be desired. It is only right that they are audited to authenticate their sudden source of wealth,” he said.

Mr Mututho accused the lot of frustrating the war on drug abuse in the country, saying they were working for their own interest.

“Their failure to do what they are supposed to do amounts to abetting the vice,” he said.

Mr Mututho said he had to use his own cash to fund an anti-drug campaign held in Mombasa at the weekend.

“There is no need to go for drug barons across the borders when those culpable are right under our noses,” said the Nacada chairman.

He said the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) was in possession of 18 files of corruption cases, and urged the agency to prosecute the accused.

Mr Mututho has perpetually raised concern over corruption, and in June, he accused some Nacada officials of awarding millions of shillings to non-existent NGOs.

He said Sh99 million meant to boost the war on drug abuse ended up in the hands of non-existent and unworthy groups.

Mr Mututho called for the arrest of individuals behind a video showing minors engaging in a vulgar dance.

At the same time, the Nacada boss regretted the flouting of the “Mututho laws” by a liquor advertising agency and warned it of dire consequences.
