Kirinyaga Governor, Joseph Ndathi has accused his political rivals of fronting former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru to run for the county’s top seat in order to split his votes in his Gichugu home turf and ensure he is not re-elected in the 2017 elections.

"My foes from a certain area in the region are not happy with me being a governor and want to spoil my chances of being elected [for] a second term," he said Saturday when presenting beehives to Kimunye Unity Self-help Group in Kimunye village.

Mr Ndathi said his enemies know very well that Gichugu is his political stronghold and that is why they have prevailed upon Ms Waiguru to oppose him.

"She is being fronted by my enemies who were not pleased when I was elected the governor in 2013," Mr Ndathi said in reference to Ms Waiguru who recently launched her bid for the Kirinyaga governor’s seat.

Both Ms Waiguru and Mr Ndathi come from Gichugu Constituency, which has more than 70,000 registered voters.

Mr Ndathi previously served as a senior administrator in the national government but quit to join politics while Ms Waiguru, an economist, was appointed as Devolution CS but resigned amid claims of corruption in her ministry.

He said the plot to have him edged out in the next polls is well-known to him and urged voters in Gichugu to refuse to be divided.

"I want to tell the Gichugu residents that there is a scheme to divide them so that I may not be re-elected and they should be careful," said Mr Ndathi.

The County boss said he had been silent for long but decided to speak out so that the Gichugu residents could know the truth.

"These enemies want us to contest this seat because we are from the same home turf so that Gichugu can lose the gubernatorial seat," said Mr Ndathi.

He, however said he was ready to defend his seat vigorously on the Jubilee Party ticket.
