ODM now calls for ethnic audit at NYS

What you need to know:

  • Speaking at Maranyona Secondary School in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County where he was the chief guest at a fundraiser, Mr Mbadi claimed that most of the recruits are from one ethnic community.
  • Mr Mbadi added that the NYS would be used to do what the police did during the 2007 General Elections.
  • The ODM chairman also dismissed claims by a section of Jubilee MPs linking their sustained fight against corruption in the country to the forthcoming visit by US President Barack Obama and His Holiness Pope Francis.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party turned the heat on Jubilee administration demanding that an ethnic audit of all National Youths Service (NYS) recruits across the Country be carried out.

Party National Chairman John Mbadi on Sunday said the government has an obligation to audit all NYS recruits for Kenyans to see the tribal balances.

Speaking at Maranyona Secondary School in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County where he was the chief guest at a fundraiser, Mr Mbadi claimed that most of the recruits are from one ethnic community.

He claimed that Devolution Cabinet Secretary Ms Anne Waiguru had been placed deliberately to be in charge of NYS to not only accumulate resources for Jubilee campaigns in 2017 but to also study the strength of the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord).

“Ms Waiguru has also been placed at the helm of NYS to study the terrain of CORD strongholds like Kibra and Kisumu with a view to using them during the 2017 polls,” he added.

Mr Mbadi added that the NYS would be used to do what the police did during the 2007 General Elections.

The Suba MP who was accompanied by Homa bay Deputy Governor Hamilton Orata and several local Members of County Assembly (MCAs) said the current NYS was not doing normal functions.

“What they are doing are devolved functions which should involve various County governments. Why are they avoiding County governments,’’ charged Mr Mbadi.

The ODM chairman once again took issue with President Uhuru Kenyatta for allegedly protecting Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru.

“The President is clearly employing double standards in his alleged fight against corruption in the country”, he said.

The ODM chairman also dismissed claims by a section of Jubilee MPs linking their sustained fight against corruption in the country to the forthcoming visit by US President Barack Obama and His Holiness Pope Francis.

“Let the jubilee government stop diverting the attention of Kenyans with the impending visit of US President and the Pope.

Mr Mbadi stressed that those in the opposition have been talking about corruption in the country even before the intended visit of the US President.

Mr Mbadi said that as the opposition in the country, they will continue to sustain the fight not only on corruption but also insecurity and ethnicity.

“The opposition is not the one manufacturing corruption in the country and more so the current one on NYS,” he added.

Mr Mbadi want Ms Waiguru to come out strongly to address issues that have been raised including consultancy to firms and inflated prices to food items supplied to NYS among others.
