An oil company will spend Sh50.2 million on five projects in Turkana.

Interested parties held a meeting in Lodwar over the weekend chaired by area MP John Ledepe, where they discussed appropriate projects for the Central sub-county.

They agreed on a Sh3.2 million secondary school scholarship, Sh5 million for bursaries and a solar project worth Sh2 million at Kerio Secondary.

Other projects are a new health centre at Kanam Kemer ward at the cost of Sh24 million and a Sh16 million water and sanitation project in Kerio.

Initially, Sh24 million had been allocated to Lodwar District Hospital to upgrade it to a county referral hospital.

However, the district advisory committee opposed the suggestion and instead urged the British oil exploration company to reduce the congestion and distance covered by most patients to the district hospital by building one.

“The county government had already released Sh190 million for upgrading the facility to a referral hospital. There is no need to increase funding when Turkana has limited health facilities,” Kanam Kemer ward representative James Ikeny said.

Mr Ikeny said the ward had no public health facility and building one would be a relief to area residents.

The county was represented by public service, decentralised administration and disaster management executive Charles Lokioto Ewoi who agreed with the resolutions.
