Isiolo police arrest two teachers suspected of recruiting youth for Shabaab

Two primary school teachers suspected to be radicalising and recruiting young people to join Al-Shabaab terror group have been arrested in Isiolo.

Mr Abdi Abdulahi Yusuf and Mr Hassan Wario Sora were arrested at 4pm on Monday while in school by a combined team of security officers.

Police were tipped off by informants, who were said to be aware of the suspects' activities.

Isiolo County Criminal Investigation Officer (CCIO) David Cheruiyot said police were interrogating the suspects, both aged below 45.

He said the suspects have been using their position as teachers to radicalise youth and recruiting them to join militia groups.

“We had crucial information about their operations,” said Mr Cheruiyot.

He said the suspects would help the security agents in combating the Somali-based terror group that has killed many Kenyans.

Mr Cheruiyot said police are also investigating a group of suspects who have been linked to the disappearance of some youth in Isiolo.

The suspects were handed over to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit where they will be held for 10 days as investigations continue.

Mr Cheruiyot said police have intensified a crackdown on Al-Shabaab suspects in the region.

Isiolo is said to be gaining reputation as a recruiting ground for Al-Shabaab.
