Police and a chief have been accused of blocking the arrest of a 15-man gang that raped two girls as their father watched.

Children’s rights activist Ibrahim Aden alleged a deliberate attempt by police and the chief to cover up the matter and have it resolved through maslah, a traditional dispute resolution mechanism.

“Considering the nature and sensitivity of this matter, the suspects should have been apprehended like Tuesday, but there is a deliberate attempt by police to cover up this matter.”

He said his organisation, Change Agents, had evidence of apparent efforts to cover up the matter and shield the suspects from arrest.

He claimed Bura Tana police station commander had deliberately transferred the file to Hola yet the crime took place in his territory.

OBSTRUCTING JUSTICE

The activist has called for the dismissal of the police boss and the chief for allegedly obstructing justice for the victims. “This is total reluctance from the police and local administration.”

He said the officials must be investigated alongside the 15 gang members. We could not reach the police station commander in Bura as he could not be reached on phone.
