Policy on fighting extremism developed

A policy on fighting extremism and radicalisation in Mombasa has been developed.
The draft, “Mombasa Counter Violent Extremism Strategy” has been submitted to security agencies for verification and input before being implemented, Haki Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid said Wednesday.
“In the last few months, we have held meetings with different groups to get comments on what the strategy should entail,” he said.
Mr Khalid added that the plan sought to address violent extremism, promote human rights, peace and security in the coastal town.
“Mombasa has been at the centre of radicalisation, disappearances and extra-judicial killings for years now,” he said.
Mr Khalid said extremism had led to insecurity, affecting business and ordinary lives.
He added that once security agencies gave their contribution, the strategy would be revised and shared with the public for more input before a final copy was produced.
He said women, youths, police officers, teachers, religious leaders and professionals had been consulted when developing the paper.
The first meeting was held in January.
