Cord leader Raila Odinga’s much-hyped tour of Baringo County on Thursday has been postponed indefinitely.

Mr Odinga was scheduled to visit areas hardest-hit by insecurity, with more than 100 killed and thousands displaced.

On Wednesday, ODM communications director Philip Etale said Mr Odinga had another urgent engagement today and had to put on hold his Baringo visit.

“Mr Odinga will be meeting a group of people visiting the country from abroad and who wished to meet him,” Mr Etale said.

He went on: “Plans for the meeting are still on and he (Mr Odinga) will announce a new date soon.”

The Cord leader was scheduled to visit Muchongoi Division at 10am and later address a rally at Kabel Centre before proceeding to Loitip for another meeting at Loitip Primary School.

During the visit, Mr Odinga was scheduled to visit families affected by banditry due to the dispute among the Pokot, Tugen and Ilchamus peoples.

Tension remains high at Chemoe village in Baringo North after suspected cattle rustlers attacked the area before they were repulsed by Anti-Stock Theft Unit officers.

“Most people have relocated to safer areas due to impending attacks that have instilled fear among the residents,” said Mr Daniel Kibet, a resident of Chemoe.

Meanwhile, Deputy President William Ruto is scheduled to visit Baringo County this weekend. This comes in the wake of a recent meeting in the county by Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto and Senator Gideon Moi.

Mr Moi, who is also the Kanu chairman, secretary-general Nick Salat, the Bomet governor, his Kericho counterpart Paul Chepkwony and Narok Senator Stephen Ole Ntutu held a breakfast meeting at Mara Safari Club in Narok County on Sunday.

Mr Ruto, Prof Chepkwony and Mr Ntutu are perceived as rebels in the Deputy President’s URP.

Sources said the DP’s party was on Wednesday trying to find a response to the first public meeting between Mr Moi and the perceived URP rebels, following a recent tour of the South Rift by the Kanu leader.

Mr Salat on Wednesday said the meeting at Mara Safari Club “brought together friends”.

“It was just a breakfast meeting bringing together friends. We will continue having such breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Except for Governor Chepkwony,” Mr Salat told the Nation by telephone.
