A disabled boy who was kept in a sheep pen for 10 years in Majengo, Narok County, has received a wheelchair and medical attention.

The wheelchair was donated by Dr David ole Sankok, chairman of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities. He has also pledged to clear the 12-year-old’s hospital bill.

He spoke to the Press when he visited the boy yesterday at Narok County hospital. The boy was receiving treatment for bed sores, malnutrition and rickets, and was responding very well, he added.

“The boy will be able to sit without support in a short time. The bed sores have dried and once doctors give him a clean bill of health, we will take him to a children’s home or a rehabilitation centre,” he said.

At the weekend, the chairman led a team of volunteers and journalists to rescue the boy who had been tied and chained to his bed and locked-up for 10 years in a small shack with livestock.

The rescue operation shocked neighbours, many of whom appeared not to have known that there was such a child in the home.

Dr Sankok said the child had been reconciled with his parents. He appealed to families with disabled children to register them with the council instead of hiding them.

“We are appealing to well wishers to come forth and help this boy acquire education. I will also formally write to the disabled’s council, requesting it to sponsor his education,” said Dr Sankok.
