Residents refuse to leave land earmarked for Sh14bn dam

  • Water and Irrigation Principal Secretary Fred Segor told the Nation on the phone that the ministry had reached an advanced stage in its plan to build the dam.

Residents have opposed plans by the Water and Irrigation ministry to construct a Sh14 billion dam in Marigat, Baringo County.

They have refused to be moved to create room for the project.

The construction of the 27-million-cubic-litre Radat Dam is meant to benefit the community in terms of irrigation and domestic use.

But the Marigat residents opposed the construction of the dam saying they are not ready to move. They have asked Senator Gideon Moi to intervene.

“We expected our senator to tell the National Irrigation Board that we don’t support the project but his silence makes us wonder over his stance regarding the matter,” said Mr Wilson Mutai, a resident.

Mr Stephen Cherotich, a resident on whose piece of land the dam is set to be built, said he was neither ready to receive compensation nor vacate the property.
