One dead as fighting escalates in Rhamu, Mandera

At least one person has been confirmed dead after heavily armed men attacked Rhamu in Mandera County in renewed clan fights.
Rhamu Ward MCA Isack Dahir Abdi confirmed the death and added that thousands of people were reportedly displaced after their houses were burnt to ashes.
There were also reports of more casualties with security personnel being unable to access the town which borders Ethiopia.
Mr Abdi told Nation.co.ke that the fight that started at 5am went on for the whole day with some of the residents opting to stay indoors.
He said an unknown number of livestock were also driven to neighbouring Ethiopia adding that the attackers were believed to have coming from the Ethiopian side.
SITUATION PATHETIC
“People here are in constant fear. No shops have opened today and the situation is very pathetic as we speak,” he said.
The Rhamu Ward MCA said similar attacks were reported Saturday but there were no casualties.
Clan fights between the Degodia and Garre have been going on in the recent months.
The latest attack in Rhamu has disrupted the peace that had been experienced for the last two months.
Efforts to reach the Mandera County commissioner for comment were unsuccessful as his phone was constantly engaged.
Earlier Sunday, Mandera County Governor Ali Roba said the situation was desperate as no security agencies had responded since the attacks began at 5am.
