Measures have been put in place to ensure learners are safe from cholera as schools re-open, the Nakuru county government has said.

The county government Monday promised to provide probiotic treatment as a preventive measure against cholera outbreak.

This comes even as the death toll from cholera in the county rose to 12 yesterday, after one more fatality was reported in Solai.

The number of infections have also climbed to 80 as health officials warned the outbreak has spread to two new locations in Nakuru North.

Nakuru chief health officer Samuel Mwaura told parents not to panic as the health department would take measures to ensure sanitation in schools is properly maintained.

CONDITION OF TOILETS

“We are on alert to ensure our children are protected by providing probiotic treatment to control infections,” said Dr Mwaura.

He said a team would be sent to schools to assess the condition of toilets and to ensure there is clean water supply. The team will also empty filled-up pit latrines.

He said they would distribute antibiotics to students as a way of controlling the spread.

Mr King’ori said all centres, with restaurants and food stalls, must ensure proper waste disposal.
