Senator Boy Juma Boy has assured the Kwale International Sugar Company of his support and asked residents to stop burning sugar cane plantations.

Out growers in the county had raised concern over increasing plantation fires, which posed a threat to the company’s operations.

The senator, who was addressing farmers at Green Wood Hotel in Ramisi, condemned the incidents, saying the people burning the sugar cane should look for other means of expressing their grievances.

“Even (for) us leaders, there are a number of issues that we feel are not right in this country, but we do not bomb it to show our displeasure,” he said.

TAKING THE LAW INTO THEIR HANDS

The senator urged the farmers and locals to involve leaders when they have problems, instead of taking the law into their hands.

He said no issue could not be resolved through dialogue and assured farmers that the county’s leaders would ensure their demands are met.

“My appeal to those who are having issues with the company is that they should come to us and we are ready to listen to them in order to arrive at an amicable solution,” he said.

He told the farmers not to lose hope, saying the challenges would not bring the company down.

The farmers organised the meeting due to fears that the burning of plantations could hamper the progress of the company.

At least 400 acres of sugar cane plantations have been burnt in Kinondo, Gonjora, Kidzumbani and Mwisho wa Shamba in Msambweni Sub-County.
