Seven Lamu killings suspects freed for lack of evidence

A court has freed seven people charged in connection with killings in Lamu and Tana River counties.
The suspects were freed after the prosecution told the court that investigations revealed that they had not participated in the killings.
The investigating officer in the case, Police Constable Bernard Kaguru, who is attached to the Lamu West Criminal Investigation Department, asked the court on Tuesday to release the seven unconditionally.
“The suspects have undergone thorough identification, forensic analysis and I have also collected views from various eyewitnesses. I have confirmed that these seven have no link with terrorists nor participated in the murder. I, hence, beg this honourable court to allow these Kenyans be released unconditionally,” said Mr Kaguru.
APPLICATION ALLOWED
Mr Jare Ellema, Mr Said Abdalla, Mr Yusufu Mohamed Ali, Mr Ali Mugo, Mr Mohamed Jara, Mr Wanje Kahindi Kitsao and Mr Hassan Ali Mohamed, were being held at the Mpeketoni Police Station after they were arrested between July 24 and July 31, 2014.
The seven were alleged to have participated in the mass killings in various parts of Lamu and Tana River counties in June and July.
Lamu Resident Magistrate David Ireri allowed the application.
