Laikipia County government has earmarked Sh120 million for setting up of 12 milk cooling plants in the next five years, Governor Joshua Irungu has said.

Each of the plants will cost Sh10 million and Sh34 million has been set aside for the project this financial year.

Mr Irungu at the weekend said farmers needed a lot of support since many parts of the county are arid and not favourable for dairy farming.

“Farming of maize, beans and other crops does not do well because many areas of our county are dry.

We must develop the dairy industry so that it can complement farmers’ incomes,” he said during the launch of Tigithi-Umoja Dairy Cooperative Society at Matanya market.

Farmers will be required to form co-operatives societies to benefit from the cooling plants, Mr Irungu said.
