The county government has set aside Sh1.9 million for distribution of uncollected ID cards to residents across all the 30 wards.

Governor Cornel Rasanga said Monday the decision was aimed at shielding residents from the burden of travelling long distances to collect the vital document.

Mr Rasanga added that the initiative was part of the county government’s goal of ensuring that Siaya people see the benefits of devolution.

The governor said part of the funds would be used to pay for allowances and lunch of the officers conducting the registration and fuelling the vehicles that will be used in distributing the IDs.

“We have realised that a lot of ID cards are lying at various collection centres within the county, and the owners are not in a position to collect them due to financial constraints,” said Mr Rasanga in West Yimbo after inspecting various development projects funded by the county government.

The governor said the initiative would also involve encouraging more residents to apply for the ID to help them become financially independent.

Last month, Siaya county registrar of persons Reuben Andati urged politicians to educate residents on the importance of acquiring IDs.
