The county government has set aside Sh1 billion to build access roads in Uasin Gishu County.

The roads would increase agricultural production by 40 per cent by 2017, said Governor Jackson Mandago.

“The county wants agriculture to grow experientially and excellent roads across the region will get us there,” said Mr Mandago.

He noted that roads and infrastructure were the backbone of development and would be key to measuring the success of devolution.

The governor was speaking during the commissioning of a bridge in Kong’asis village of Ainabkoi sub-county.

“We cannot grow if there is no smooth flow of produce from farms to the market,” he noted.

In the same function, Mr Mandago disclosed that the county would, from next month, roll out training for farmers to improve production.

Mr Mandago encouraged the production of flowers and other horticultural crops to cash in on the potential of the Eldoret International Airport.

The county chief also urged residents to reduce the acreage under maize production and instead keep dairy cows.
