Speaker Geoffrey Korir’s job is safe after MCAs shot down a motion to impeach him.

Ironically, those who voted against the impeachment included 14 ward reps who had sought his ouster two weeks ago.

Merigi Ward MCA Sammy Chelule who tabled the motion is among those who had a change of heart.

In his motion, Mr Chelule said that on July 28, the Speaker misadvised the assembly to debate the County Appropriation (Amendment) Bill 2014, despite having earlier ruled it unprocedural.

The Speaker was further accused of allowing the Bill to pass.

This, the MCA said, disregarded the requirements of the Public Finance Management Act 2012.

When the motion against Mr Korir came up for debate on Thursday, majority of the reps defended him.

The Speaker dismissed allegations against him as “baseless, saying that he had exposed “the rot” in the assembly.

Mr Korir maintained that he advised MCAs not to debate the amendment Bill and had handled the House business professionally.

When the temporary Speaker put the motion to vote, 32 ward reps opposed it.

Addressing the Press after the assembly passed the verdict, Mr Chelule said that the manner in which the Speaker defended himself clearly showed that he is competent.
