Student killed by explosive in Mandera

A secondary school student was killed and his siblings injured after a metallic object they were playing with exploded in Mandera town.

According to the police, the 15-year-boy and his two brothers came across the shining object lying on a graveyard when they were heading home from a river in Bulla-Tawakal village.

Mandera East OCPD Jackson Rotich said the boys collected the object suspected to a be a hand grenade on Sunday and started playing with it.

“The deceased got a hammer and started hitting the object as his siblings gathered around him to watch. The object exploded injuring the three family members,” he said.

The OCPD said the form two student at a local secondary died shortly after arriving at the Mandera district hospital. His two brothers are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Recently, three children from same family were killed after a device they were playing went off in Saka area in Garissa County.
