Students charged with planning to torch school

What you need to know:

  • They were charged that on July 14, at Lelboinet Secondary School in Chepkorio division Keiyo South Sub County within Elgeyo Marakwet County jointly with others not in court conspired together to commit a felony namely arson with intent to burn the school’s Dining Hall.
  • The court was told that the school head teacher received information before he reported the matter to the police who later nabbed the student in possession of five litres of petrol.

Eighteen students of Lelboinet Secondary School were on Thursday arraigned in an Eldoret court for allegedly conspiring to burn down their school Dining Hall.

They were charged that on July 14, at Lelboinet Secondary School in Chepkorio division Keiyo South Sub County within Elgeyo Marakwet County jointly with others not in court conspired together to commit a felony namely arson with intent to burn the school’s Dining Hall.

The court was told that the school head teacher received information before he reported the matter to the police who later nabbed the student in possession of five litres of petrol.

In total 32 students were arrested, 14 were found not to have been involved in the conspiracy.

The accused who appeared before Chief Magistrate Wanjiku Cherere pleaded not guilty.

The magistrate granted them a bond of Sh50, 000 with surety of the same amount.

10 of them managed to raise the amount while the rest remained in custody.

Case will be heard on August 22, 2016.

Elsewhere, six of 11 students of St Francis Kimuron Secondary in Elgeyo Marakwet who were caught with petrol were charged in a court in Iten. They denied conspiring to set their school ablaze.
