Students in hospital after another dormitory blaze

  • On Saturday, Nyarongi Secondary School dormitory was burnt. Two days earlier, there was an explosion at Ullanda Girls Secondary School and 20 girls were injured trying to escape.

A school hostel was burnt down on Monday bringing to three the total number of institutions gutted by fire in the county.

At least 12 students from Nyabisawa Girls are admitted to various hospitals after a dormitory was burnt down on Sunday night.
NEARLY SUFFOCATED

The girls were inside a neighbouring room, usually used as the sick bay, when the fire broke out at 8pm.

They nearly suffocated from the fumes emitted from the burning debris while others fainted.

Other students were studying when the building caught fire.

A few who attempted to save their belongings also sustained injuries. The victims are admitted to Akidiva and Migori Level Four hospitals.

“I was in class when I heard distress calls… I rushed to the scene, but fainted,” Form Four student Hellen Boke said from her hospital bed at Akidiva.

The school principal, Ms Beatrice Kore, said they were investigating what caused the fire to determine whether it was an arson attack or an electrical fault. The school and students lost Sh4 million.
