A warrant of arrest has been issued against Tana River Senator Ali Abdi Bule over claims of ethnic contempt, incitement to violence and disobedience of the law.

Mombasa Principal Magistrate Diana Mochache issued the warrant of arrest despite the prosecution having sought for summons to have the senator attend court to plead to the charges.

The magistrate, who said summons would not suffice since the charges are criminal in nature and not civil, directed the senator to be in court on Monday next week.

Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Alexander Muteti had sought for summons to have Mr Bule attend court on Monday to plead to the charges.

The warrant of arrest is expected to be effected by Chief Inspector Robert Mabera, the head of investigations at National Cohesion and Integration Commission with assistance of the officer commanding Garsen Police Station.

Mr Bule is alleged to have uttered words intended to incite feelings of hostility and violence against the Giriama community on the basis of their ethnicity.

The offences are alleged to have been committed on July 15, 2015 at Hurara centre, Garsen Sub-County in Tana River.
