Three killed in mosque accident

Three people were killed Wednesday when a mosque collapsed on Pate Island in Lamu East.

The accident happened around 12.30pm when worshippers were entering the Msikiti wa Ijumaa for their midday prayers. Two other people were injured.

A witness, Mr Athman Mohamed, narrated the events prior to the tragedy. He was among the worshippers heading for prayers.

“Five people were already inside when the mosque collapsed abruptly. Three people have died and two critically injured,” he said — remarks that were confirmed by the Lamu County Commissioner, Mr Miiri Njenga.

“I have already sent my Deputy County Commissioner Alexander Matkivo and area OCS to find out the real situation. We will give you more details later,” the officer said.

Kenya Red Cross officials were at the scene.
