Tourism board releases ranking list, investors told to aim for high standards

With the ranking of resorts being released, Tourism Regulatory Authority boss has encouraged investors in the sector to strive in putting up facilities that meet the highest international standards to attract more customers.

In a Kenya gazette notice published on March 18, different lodges, tented camps and hotels were rated as four-star, five as three-star and two as two-star.

“When our tourist facilities are world class, the country will attract more international tourists and boost our economy as well as help create more jobs for the youth,” Mr Kipkorir Lagat, the director-general said on Saturday.

Five-star lodge: Mara Serena Safari Lodge located in Maasai Mara National Reserve, Narok County.

Five-star camps: Olare Mara Kempinski, situated in Olare Motorogi Conservancy (Narok county) and Lake Elementaita Serena Camp in Nakuru.

Four-star lodges: Maasai Mara Sopa Lodge (Narok), Olarro Lodge (Narok), Sarova Lion Game Lodge (Nakuru), Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge (Nakuru) and Sentrim Elementeita Lodge (Nakuru).

Three-star lodges: Mara Engai Wilderness Lodge (Narok), Mara Simba Lodge (Narok), Lake Naivasha Simba Lodge (Nakuru), Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort (Nakuru) and Lake Nakuru Flamingo Lodge.

Four-star camps: Governors Ilmoran Camp, Ashnil Mara Camp, Mara Explorers Camp, Sarova Mara Game Camp, Mara Intrepids Camp, DBA Mara West Tented Camp and Little Governors’ Camp -- all are situated in Narok County.

Three-star camps: Sekenani Camp, Tipilikwani Mara Camp and Sanctuary Olonana Camp -- all located in Narok.

Two-star camps: Governors’ Camp in the Mara (Narok), Porini Mara Camp (Narok), Mara Siria Luxury Tented Bush Camp (Narok) and Kiboko Bay Resort in Kisumu.

Three-star hotels: Hotel Cathay (Nakuru), Kisumu Hotel

Two-star hotels: Chester Hotel, Hill Court Resort and Spa and Agricultural Resource Centre (ARC) Hotel -- also in Nakuru.

One-star hotel: Dewchurch Drive Hotel (Kisumu).

Speaking to the Nation on phone, Mr Lagat said the authority is currently classifying hotels in Taita Taveta and Kilifi counties while tourism establishments in Kwale and Mombasa would be rated next month.
