An MP has asked the government to deport refugees who have lived in the country for too long.

Turkana North lawmaker Chris Nakuleu told the Nation that thousands of South Sudanese have been living in the country since 2002.

The legislator said the government needs to be tough on illegal migrants and raised the alarm over what he termed as illegal encroachment along the Kenyan border.

“As the crackdown on illegal immigrants continues, the Turkana border issues should also be accorded the urgency it deserves,” said Mr Nakuleu.

BUILT ROADS

He claimed that refugees have taken over three locations in the Turkana North constituency, the area bordering South Sudan and Ethiopia countries.

They are said to have entered the country through Napaoi, Aloito and Letimor entry points.

Mr Nakulei said he had reported the matter to the police but no action has been taken.

“Every time we follow-up, we are told that officers have been told to look into the matter. However, nothing has been done so far,” he added.

He accused refugees of even building access roads linking Kenya and South Sudan and using the routes to smuggle goods.

“They are living without fear. They have dug boreholes, started villages and built roads linking Kenya to their country of origin,” stressed the leader.
