Two children died on Tuesday evening after a matatu they were travelling in was involved in an accident along the Narok-Mai Mahiu road.

Some 40 survivors of the accident that involved a matatu and two cars are nursing serious injuries at the Narok County Referral Hospital.

Narok North Deputy Police boss Charles Ouma, who confirmed the accident, said the dead were children who were passengers in the matatu that was travelling from Narok Town to Melili in Narok North Sub-County.

“The matatu rammed into two personal vehicles that were heading to Nairobi.

“One of the children died on the spot while the other died on arrival at the Narok referral hospital,’ said Mr Ouma.

According to police, the accident happened hardly a kilometre away from a police road block in Ilmashariani.

DRIVER SPEEDING

“The driver of the vehicle was speeding [away from] a traffic police roadblock to avoid inspection since the vehicle was overloaded, when the accident occurred,” said Mr Ouma.

Survivors interviewed by the Nation at the Narok County Referral Hospital, among them Mr Robert Nkukuu and Nalotuesha Saipuko, narrated how the vehicle was zigzagging on the road before it hit the two approaching vehicles and landed in a ditch.

“The vehicle was overloaded and there were passengers standing and others seated on the floor with a lot of luggage all over. The driver seemed to have been drunk,” said Ms Nalotuesha.

But Police said they were yet to establish the real cause of the accident, saying the driver of the matatu would be tested to establish if he was drunk.

Bodies of the deceased were taken to Narok County Referral Hospital mortuary while the mangled wreckages of the vehicles were towed to the Narok Police Station.
