Two people, among them a police officer, have been killed at Mbirikani Group Ranch in Kajiado County following clashes involving rival groups at the expansive ranch.
Kajiado south OCPD Albert Khaemba on Saturday said that the violence started when some members of the group blockaded the Loitokitok road protesting over the sale of a section of the ranch to foreign investors.
“I can confirm that one AP officer has been killed and a youth has died after the violence that erupted after the road was blocked by a section of the members of the ranch,” Mr Khaemba said.
Khaemba said that the youth were protesting against the sale of the land and that is when the violence erupted.
Governor David Nkedianye’s attempts to intervene to quell the violence were futile as it had already gone out of control.
The group’s Chairman Daniel Somoire said that no land had been leased to anyone.
“This ranch has 4,600 members and we cannot engage in any such transactions. The protesters must have been incited to demonstrate against the ranch members,” Mr Somoire said.
Tension still remained high in the area.
