Universities Academic Staff Union chairman Sam Kubasu and three other officials were on Friday arrested after giving a strike notice at Masinde Muliro University in Kakamega County.

The arrests ignited an immediate response from Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, who stormed the police station they were taken to demanding their immediate release.

The officials were arrested for staging a demonstration after they gave the strike notice.

“The university management should stop using police to harass union officials and workers and instead open up to dialogue to deal with the issues raised by aggrieved employees,” said Senator Khalwale.

About 50 university workers are camped at the police station to demand the release of their colleagues.
