President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that he is ready to work with all leaders irrespective of their political affiliations.

The President said this will ensure that all Kenyans receive efficient and effective services from the government.

He was speaking at the Kakamega State Lodge Saturday when he met leaders from Kakamega and Vihiga counties to discuss development issues affecting the two counties.

President Kenyatta was accompanied by his Deputy William Ruto.

“What is important is not how much noise politicians make but what they do to improve the welfare of the citizens. As leaders, therefore, we must respect the will of the people, put aside political differences and work together in serving the electorate,” President Kenyatta said.

The President told members of county assemblies (MCAs) from the two counties to play their role effectively in taking services to the grassroots level.

FOSTER DEVELOPMENT

He said while the national government does its part, the county governments also have to be at the forefront in fostering development at the grassroots if devolution is to succeed.

Responding to infrastructure concerns raised by the leaders, President Kenyatta said the government has put in place a national programme to construct 2000 kilometres of roads from which the two counties will also benefit.

He said the construction of roads that had stalled in the two counties would be revived.

He said the national government will work with the county governments to address the challenges facing sugarcane and maize farmers from the region.

HARMONISE PLANS

He stressed the need for the national and county governments to harmonise development plans to ensure effective implementation of projects.

Deputy President Ruto appealed to the leaders not to dwell on divisive politics but focus on serving citizens.

“Our responsibility as leaders is not to continue politicking long after the elections but to settle down and serve the electorate,” Mr Ruto said.

Lurambi Member of Parliament Raphael Otaalo said the people of Western Kenya wanted development and would not follow the Opposition blindly.

“You are the right choice for this country. Continue uniting the country,” Mr Otaalo told the President and his Deputy.

Kakamega Deputy Governor Prof Phillip Kutima said his county government has been working in harmony with the national government and that is why the two levels of government have not experienced frictions in the county.
