Unclaimed bodies chock mortuaries

Public mortuaries in Kisii, Bomet, Nyamira and Migori counties are full of many unclaimed bodies, some of which have there for three years.

Most bodies were delivered by police after traffic accidents or suicides while others have not been claimed by families due to medical bills or property disputes.

Nyamira County Referral Hospital has asked a court to let them bury the bodies.

Administrator Andrew Ntabo, said yesterday they intend to bury 15 bodies that have not been claimed since 2012.

“Our mortuary has a capacity of 12 bodies, but it is now crammed full,” he said.

In Bomet County, 24 unclaimed bodies are at Longisa hospital mortuary.

Of the 24 bodies, eight are of six males and two females, said Dr Bernard Sowek, the county health chief.

Migori public hospital has six unclaimed bodies. Health chief officer Donald Jaleny said they would be disposed of in August.

At Kisii public hospital 11 bodies have been unclaimed or more than six months.

“Many are accident victims,” county public health office Melitus Kabar said
