A senator wants the University of Eldoret Vice-Chancellor sacked within five days.

Isaac Melly (Uasin Gishu) on Friday accused Prof Teresa Akenga of nepotism and not giving jobs at the university.

“We call upon Education Cabinet Secretary and the Commission for University Education to take action because the institution has been plagued by tribal appointments and promotions,” Mr Melly said.

ONLY TWO LOCALS

But Prof Akenga stood her ground against the accusations and boldly told Mr Melly that the university is run by a management board and follows the rules set by the ministry.

She added: “More than 50 per cent of the university’s employees come from the local community.”

The senator rallied some students and the public to brazenly lock the vice-chancellor’s office for almost four hours on Thursday.

Majority Leader Josephat Lowoi said only two locals hold high positions at the institution.

“More of our people should be employed at the university. She has short-changed us,” Mr Lowoi said.

He was supported by the chairman of the budget committee, Jonathan Kiprop.
