Luhya MPs have formed a caucus that seeks to transform the economy of the region.

About 40 leaders are attending a meeting convened by Budalang'i MP Ababu Namwamba in Vihiga County. They toured struggling companies in the region with a view of reviving them.

Sabatia MP Alfred Agoi said the discussions might run into the night.

In a telephone interview, he further told Nation.co.ke that the MPs will also discuss the region's economy.

"The meeting is expected to begin this evening as we discuss who to work with politically even as we consolidate our political base," said Mr Agoi.

He also said that the MPs would brief the media on Monday morning about the decision of the meeting.

"After the brief the MPs will make an impromptu visit to the ailing Mudete Tea Factory and Mumias Sugar Company to assess their operational status," said the legislator.

The meeting is the fourth in a series of similar ones held in the past with other activities geared towards uniting the Luhya community.

"Such meetings will go on in the future until our political base in the region is consolidated," Mr Agoi said.

Proponents of the unity bid say the region has performed dismally in national politics because of the divergent opinions of its leaders.
