More than 100 villagers stormed a police station and freed four people arrested for attempting to circumcise a 10-year-old girl.

The villagers, who threatened to break into the Norrosura Police Station cells on Tuesday evening, overwhelmed officers and walked away with the suspects.

Police said the four had been apprehended for attempting to subject a the class five pupil to female genital mutilation.

The girl was rescued by World Vision officers, whose pleas to the villagers not to storm the station fell on deaf ears.

ALTERNATIVE RITES

Narok World Vision Coordinator Benardette Loloju, however, compelled the girl’s parents to commit themselves in writing that they would not subject her to the cut.

Ms Loloju said the girl, who was among 300 graduates who underwent the Alternative Rite of Passage last week, was rescued after she alerted her teacher.

The Ilkimati Primary School pupil had just arrived home after undergoing a week-long ARP training in Narok Town organised by World Vision, when her parents told her she would be circumcised.

“She asked for a phone from someone on the pretext that she wanted to call her parents and told us where she had been hidden,” said Ms Loloju, adding that her organisation would enrol the girl in a boarding school next year.
