Warring communities in Marsabit County Saturday participated in a peace marathon to promote their co-existence ahead of World Peace Day celebrations in Moyale Town on Sunday.

Deputy Governor Abdi Omar flagged off the seven kilometre marathon that attracted 60 participants amid chants of peace from locals who only recently never saw eye to eye.

Four teams also participated in a football tournament organized by the county government to bring the communities together for development.

The winners of both the marathon and football tournament will be rewarded with various prizes during the World Peace Day celebrations at Moyale grounds, Mr Omar said.

”We want to get the people together and celebrate the prevailing peace. Things have cooled down and locals are now working together, talking and doing business. Normalcy has returned to our county which was previously rocked with skirmishes,” Mr Omar said.

He said the county government was keen on ensuring locals understood the importance of peace and co-existed peacefully for development.

“All the communities are involved. The marathon involved young men and women,” Mr Omar said.

The marathon and football matches were also attended by senior national government officials from the sub-county and security personnel.
