Senate Minority Leader Moses Wetang’ula has hit out at the Jubilee administration for “failing the western region population”.

Speaking during a Ford-Kenya rally in Mayuba Stadium, Sirisia, Mr Wetang’ula said the current regime was only giving the Western residents false promises in a bid to win over their votes.

Mr Wetang’ula, who is also the Bungoma senator, said Jubilee had promised goodies to the residents yet they had not delivered three years into their administration.

“We know they promised the region things but they have not delivered at all. We know this is trying to hoodwink our people but we are very keen,” he said.

The senator further faulted President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto, saying they are presiding over a tribal regime.

He said the politics of receiving delegations from certain communities at State House was a clear indication that he was looking at the country along tribal lines.

“[The] politics of receiving delegations at State House from communities is retrogressive.

“Instead of uniting Kenyans he is meeting leaders in terms of communities,” Mr Wetang’ula said.

PUSH TO DISBAND IEBC

He further reiterated that the Opposition's push to disband the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) would not be stopped.

The country had lost faith in the polls body, he said, and it was not a credible mediator for the 2017 elections.

Mr Wetang’ula said many institutions, including the clergy and civil society, were not happy with the commission and wanted it replaced.

“Many Kenyans have lost faith in [the] IEBC as they know that the commission is not a credible mediator and that is why we want it disbanded,” said the senator.

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale said Jubilee was out to frustrate the Opposition through intimidation.

According to Dr Khalwale, the current regime was scared of Mr Wetang’ula’s bid and that was why they were trying to stop him.

“Wetang’ula’s march to State House is unstoppable and this is the reason the Jubilee administration is trying to use all avenues to stop him," he said.

He took issue with the burning of illegal ivory tusks, saying it was not a deterrent to poachers as most poachers “were in government”.

Dr Khalwale called on the president to change tack in fighting poachers, saying there were certain people in the government who were engaging in the business.
