A 20-year-old woman was charged Friday in a Marsabit court with assaulting her four-year-old niece.

Halima Wolaso Hersi was released on a Sh50,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount or a cash bail of Sh10,000 for the crime allegedly committed on Thursday at Nyayo Road estate.

Appearing before Resident Magistrate Boaz Ombewa, she denied the charge through an interpreter, saying the injuries to the child resulted from “bad luck”.

The case will be heard on October 4.

Police said they were informed by human rights activist Nuria Gollo that a woman was torturing a child in the estate. Ms Gollo then accompanied them to the scene.

Area police boss John Kwasa told the Nation the child had severe burns on her buttocks and stomach. Mr Kwasa said the motive for the attack was still under investigations.

Ms Gollow, the coordinator for the Marsabit Women Advocacy Development Organisation, condemned the attack.

She thanked the public for reporting the assault, saying the suspect could have inflicted more injuries to the child.

She said the child was treated at Marsabit Referral Hospital and discharged and that she was in a fair condition.
