A 46-year-old woman stabbed her two children to death Tuesday before attempting to kill herself in Keiyo South District.

Ms Pauline Chepkwony, a single mother, allegedly committed the crime at her Kweny village home in Soy location, where she has been living with her parents.

She reportedly used a pen knife to kill Kipruto Ruto, 3, and 1-year-old Vivian Ruto before turning it on herself.

In the process of trying to kill herself, she wailed, attracting neighbours, who rescued her before alerting the police.

Elgeyo-Marakwet County AP Commander Sammy Chandago said officers took the suspect to Kaptagat Police Station.

She was later taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret because of excessive bleeding, said Mr Chandago.

The bodies of the children were taken to the same hospital mortuary.

Neighbours said the woman, who had been married, might have been depressed.

HOUSES BURNED

In the same county, at least 50 houses were burned down and property of unknown value destroyed by angry villagers avenging the killing of their relative, who was stabbed to death over a Sh300 dispute.

Mr Kipkosgei Kangogo was reportedly killed by a boda boda at Kerer trading centre in Embobut forest after a quarrel.

Mr Kangongo had reportedly hired the boda boda’s motorcycle but the two differed on the charges.

“In the squabble, the suspect out of anger allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed him. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries on the way,” said area OCPD Mathews Mang’ira.

In retaliation, the relatives of Mr Kangongo attacked the boda boda’s village.

“I am told such indiscriminate retaliatory attacks are inevitable cultural activities that must be carried out in the community to avenge murder, but this is a barbaric culture we should bring to an end,” said the OCPD.

And in the same trading centre, one person was killed and six others injured after a lorry ferrying potatoes they were travelling in overturned.

“The victim died as he was being rushed to AIC Kapsowar Mission Hospital for emergency treatment,” said Mr Mang’ira.
