Women in Isiolo to vie for elective posts in 2017

At least 40 women in Isiolo County have declared interest in various elective seats in the next General Election.

The aspirants, who met for a sensitisation forum on leadership that was organised by Women Representative Tiyah Galgalo, said they were ready to challenge their male counterparts in the gubernatorial, senate, national assembly and county assembly seats in 2017.

The women from Borana, Turkana, Somali, Samburu and Meru communities in the region also vowed to shun retrogressive cultural practices.

Ms Galgalo said most women from pastoralists communities have been denied opportunities to vie for political positions.

“We have experienced a lot of challenges especially with clan nominations. We call on our clans to offer us the opportunity to lead our communities,” she added.

The aspirants are set to start their campaigns soon.
