Construction of Kenya’s first fertiliser factory in Eldoret is set to begin in September, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei has said.

The factory will be one of two fertiliser manufacturing plants that the national government plans to build with the support of foreign investors.

“Construction of the first fertiliser factory in the country is one of the ministry’s efforts to reduce not only the cost of imported fertiliser but also that of general agricultural input to improve food production,” said Mr Koskei.

“We have started with one in the North Rift, which is being developed by a private firm from Japan.”

The Japanese investors were already on the ground to identify an ideal location, he told the Nation on phone Wednesday.

The second factory, for Nitrogen-based fertiliser, would be constructed in Sotik once the first is complete, he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Koskei is expected to attend the Kisumu Agricultural Show Thursday.
