Kisumu County Government insists that its employees will line up for payment by cheque despite opposition to the plan.

County Secretary Humphrey Nakitare said the decision was final and workers should prepare to line up at designated places for their January pay.

Mr Nakitare said the move would help the county get a list of its workers which will also help weed out ghost workers.

“We will not stop until we have a complete record of employees,” he said.

Mr Nakitare said the county has the discretion to pay its workers through any means it deems fit.

“We will even do it in February if we don’t get the complete list of employees this month. We also believe this is an economical way of paying as well as knowing the number of employees we have,” Mr Nakitare told the Nation on Sunday.

The directive met stiff opposition on Friday from workers who say this mode of payment is outdated.

Doctors and nurses said they’ll boycott their salaries if the government insists on payment by cheque.

They said the exercise is outdated and unacceptable as their salaries could be mishandled.

Mr Maurice Upetu, deputy secretary-general of Kenya National Union of Nurses, said cheques also faced security risks.

“How do you ask workers to line up for their salaries? How will provide us with security?” Mr Upetu asked.
