Three people have been killed in a village in Baringo South Sub-County in an attack suspected to retaliatory following the killing of a man on Sunday.

Suspected Ilchamus bandits attacked Mbechot Village on Tuesday evening when residents were having a meeting with Sub-County Commissioner Felix Kisalu.

Villagers Wednesday said the attack was probably in retaliation for the killing of an Ilchamus man in Olesampurmpur Village on Sunday.

“The man was killed by bandits and we gave the names of the suspects to the police. We are surprised that men from that community are now attacking us,” said Mr David Kiploman, a resident.

The village was Wednesday deserted except for a few men armed with spears and arrows.

Mbechot Primary School was closed following the latest attack.

RESIDENTS FLEE HOMES

The two incidences have sparked fears and fresh animosity among the warring Tugen and Ilchamus communities, which has resulted in hundreds of residents fleeing their homes.

The fresh hostilities is a big blow to peace efforts in the area which were beginning to bear fruit.

No a single attack had been reported in the last five months, thanks to peace caravans organised by leaders in the volatile region.

The residents claimed that the armed bandits descended on people who were at the trading centre and started shooting indiscriminately and a motorcyclist with two of his passengers were caught up in the melee.

One of the passengers died on the spot after he was shot in the chest while the other two were seriously injured.

One was admitted to Nakuru General Provincial Hospital while the other was referred to a Nairobi hospital with bullets still lodged in his body.

Among those killed was an old man and a Standard Eight pupil from Mbechot Primary School. He was shot while on his way home from school.
