Protests rock Bomet on Governor Isaac Ruto attack

Youth in Bomet on Sunday protested the attack by police on Governor Mr Isaac Ruto during a match between Bunge FC and Silbwet Club.

The protesting youth called on Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery to carry out urgent investigations into the incident which saw the governor sustain face injuries during the match last Sunday.

Youth leaders Richard Sigei, Mike Mutai and Clara Chepkoech called for the arrest of the police officers who lobbed teargas canisters at the county boss who is receiving treatment in a South African hospital.

On Sunday, the youth, who were demonstrating with elastoplasts strapped to their noses in support of the governor, said they will continue supporting Mr Ruto and his Chama Cha Mashinani Party.

They said they will not be coerced to join Jubilee Party which the Deputy President William Ruto plans to use to vie for presidency in 2022.

Speaking to journalists moments after the protests at Siongiroi trading centre, the youth accused certain dark forces of being behind the attack on their leader.

“We want to reiterate that what transpired during the incident was barbaric act leading to near fatal injury on the local chief executive and may others,” Mr Sigei said.

They challenged the National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Sotik MP Dr Joyce Laboso, legislators Mr Paul Bii (Chepalungu), Mr Ronald Tonui (Bomet Central) and Mr Leonard Sang (Bureti), who were all present during the incident, to shed light on the same.

They also said that organisers of last Sunday's football match between Bunge FC and Silbwet Club in Bomet should be made to record statements with the police.

Bomet senator Prof Wilfred Lesan said security officers at the function should also be made to record statements with the police.

He said that despite the incident, none of the political leaders present during last Sunday football match, has recorded any statement with the police.

“For any investigations to commence at least statements should have been recorded with the police to avoid blame game,” said the Senator.
