Amani National Congress will throw its weight behind Kanu’s flag bearer Paul Sang in the upcoming Kericho by-election.

The support from the party led by Mr Musalia Mudavadi is a major boost for Mr Sang in the March 7 senatorial seat by-election, which has been billed as a two-horse race.

ANC secretary-general Godfrey Osotsi said they will give Mr Sang moral and financial support to enable him clinch the seat which was declared vacant by the electoral commission following the appointment of Mr Charles Keter as Energy Cabinet Secretary.

Mr Osotsi was speaking to the media at a hotel in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu, after a one-day retreat with party officials from the North Rift and South Rift regions.

“We as a party have resolved to rally behind the Kanu candidate for the Kericho senatorial seat in the March 7 by-election, since we have severed links with the ruling Jubilee coalition,” he said.

AGGRESSIVE RECRUITMENT

The ANC retreat focused on a raft of issues among them aggressive recruitment of members and popularisation of the party which former Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi will use in his quest for the presidential seat in the 2017 General Elections.

Mr Sang, who was endorsed unopposed by Kanu, is set to face off with the youthful Jubilee torch bearer Aron Cheruiyot, 29, in the by-election that has been termed as titanic.

Cheruiyot garnered 17,565 votes flooring former National Housing Cooperation chair Sammy Chepkwony who came second with 17,081 votes while former Roads Minister Franklin Bett was third with 16,914 votes.

Mr Osotsi challenged President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government to immediately address the lingering historical land injustices in the Rift Valley and other parts of the country to forestall future conflicts over the land issues.

“As a party, we advise the government to desist from taking Kenyans for granted by issuing concession papers disguised as title deeds. Let us not play politics with land-related issues,” stated Mr Osotsi.
