Police in Eldoret have arrested a 24-year-old woman who allegedly stabbed her husband to death after he refused to give her money for food.

The suspect, Josephine Makato, is said to have stabbed her husband, Bilal Mbithi aged 25, on the thighs several times with a kitchen knife on Monday afternoon at Maili Nne in the outskirts of Eldoret.

The man was reported to have been annoyed when she asked him to be responsible by providing food.

However, police reports indicate that Ms Makato stabbed her husband after she found him talking with someone believed to be his lover.

The residents accused the suspect of always fighting with her husband at the slightest provocation.

DISTRESS CALL

Police arrested the suspect following distress calls from members of the public who heard the man’s loud screams and rushed to the scene and found him bleeding heavily.

Irate residents who had gathered around the homestead threatened to lynch the suspect.

They wondered why she killed her husband “yet men are hard to get”.

“Why did she have to kill her husband and getting men nowadays is hard. She should have let me have him instead,” said Grace Mutuko, one of the residents.

The injured man was rushed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.

Eldoret West police boss Samuel Mutunga, who confirmed the incident, said that the body was moved to the hospital’s mortuary while the suspect will be prosecuted.

“The suspect is in custody at Baharini Police Post and she will be charged with murder,” Mr Mutunga told the Nation.
