A mysterious fire has razed a dormitory at St Mary's Nyamagwa Girls High School in Bobasi constituency, Kisii County.

The fire, which started at 6.15am on Tuesday, destroyed most of the students' personal effects and beddings.

According to Ms Florence Osoro, the cause of the fire could not be immediately established.

Acting Kisii County Administration Police Commander Joel Kirui said his officers responded to a call from the school administration in the morning.

"We rushed to the scene and found the fire had already been contained.

“My officers are now in the process of conducting investigations," he told the Nation.

The students had gone for morning Mass at the local Catholic Church when the fire broke out.

The church stands about 100 metres from the school.

No student was injured in the incident.

The fire comes barely a day after students of neighbouring St John's Nyamagwa Boys Secondary School torched a dorm at the school to protest poor results and the principal's alleged high-handedness.

Bassi Boitang'are MCA Isaiah Mosota condemned the act, saying it was a "shameful attempt to derail the education of innocent students".

"We are shocked and saddened by these senseless acts that are an indication of attempts to derail the education of innocent children," he told the Nation.
