The cholera outbreak in Migori and Homa Bay counties has made fish traders look for supplies from Lake Turkana.

Kakamega Fishmongers Chairman Peter Sunguti said health officials, led by County Health boss Aggrey Indeche, visited the market Wednesday and asked them to maintain high standards of hygiene.

However, they said transport costs from Lodwar were high.

“We have put in place measures to ensure proper hygiene is maintained,” said Mr Indeche.

Meanwhile, Bondo Public Health Officer Walter Ongoro asked Lake Victoria fish traders to observe cleanliness.

He encouraged beach residents to use pit latrines.

“Our officers will patrol the lakeshores and ensure that locals uphold cleanliness.

“This will avert a cholera outbreak in Siaya,” said Mr Ongoro.

At the same time, Siaya Beach Management Unit Chairman Tobias Katete expressed concern that most people living on the lakeshore paid little attention to hygiene.

“Siaya neighbours Homa Bay, a county which has recorded cholera deaths.

“We hope to shield residents from the disease,” he said.
