Newly elected Garissa Governor Ali Korane on Tuesday demanded the County Public Service Board to furnish him with a list of employees within 10 days.

Speaking in his office a day after being sworn into office, Mr Korane said he will only work with staff who are legally employed and went through the laid down employment procedures.

It is estimated that the county has a workforce of about 5,000 employees, most of whom were not vetted by the public service board.

The Governor made the remarks when he met the County Public Service Board members led by their Chairman Harun Yussuf.

“We wanted the list of all staff in the county but they (board) are not ready and I have given them 10 days to provide me with all county workforce,” said Mr Korane who was accompanied by his Deputy Abdi Dagane.

Mr Korane said it is a criminal offence for anyone to be employed without going through employment procedures.

The governor took oath of office on Monday.
